Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about UT3MOD.COM and PS3 modding

General

What is UT3MOD.COM?

UT3MOD.COM is the largest archive of Unreal Tournament 3 mods for PlayStation 3. Originally created in 2007 by Herby on Google's Blogger platform, the site quickly became the go-to destination for PS3 players looking to expand their UT3 experience with custom maps, characters, weapons, and game modes.

The site was featured inside UT3's in-game browser by Epic Games in 2008 — a rare honor that made it one of the first community mod sites to receive official recognition from a game developer on console. After going offline in 2020, the site was rebuilt in 2026 as a modern static archive, preserving 414 mods with 332 working downloads.

Are the mods free to download?

Yes. Every mod on UT3MOD.COM is completely free to download. These mods were created by the UT3 community and shared freely. We preserve and serve them at no cost. There are no paywalls, no registration requirements, and no download limits.

Is UT3MOD.COM affiliated with Epic Games?

No. UT3MOD.COM is an independent community archive. While Epic Games featured the original site inside UT3's in-game browser in 2008, we are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Epic Games, Inc. Unreal Tournament 3 is a trademark of Epic Games. All mod content was created by independent community modders.

Where do the mod files come from?

The mod files are sourced from two Internet Archive collections that community members preserved: the ut3ps3modarchive and ut-3-ps-3-pkg collections. Together, these collections contain 961+ files and approximately 40 GB of data. We verified each file, organized them into 20 categories, and made them available for direct download from our servers.

PS3 Compatibility

Do these mods work on PS3?

Yes. All mods on UT3MOD.COM are in USERDATA.JAM format, which is the PS3's native mod import format for Unreal Tournament 3 (disc version BLUS30086). This format was designed by Epic Games specifically for PS3 mod support. You need a FAT32-formatted USB drive to transfer the files to your PS3.

What is USERDATA.JAM?

USERDATA.JAM is the file format used by the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 for importing mods. It's a container file that packages maps, characters, mutators, and other mod content into a single file the PS3 can read. You place it on a FAT32-formatted USB drive in the folder PS3/SAVEDATA/BLUS30086-MODIMPORT/ and import it through the game's Community → My Content → Import Mod menu.

Do these mods work on PC?

No. The USERDATA.JAM files are PS3-specific and cannot be used on PC. The PC version of Unreal Tournament 3 uses entirely different mod formats (.ut3, .upk, .zip). Many of the same mods exist for PC from their original creators — search for the mod name on sites like ModDB or the Unreal Engine forums. We may add PC mod downloads in the future.

Which version of UT3 do I need?

You need the North American PS3 disc version of Unreal Tournament 3 with game ID BLUS30086. This is the standard US retail version. The mod import feature was a unique capability of the PS3 version — UT3 on PS3 was one of the first console games to support user-created mods, a landmark feature that set it apart from other console shooters of its era.

Are these mods safe to download?

Yes. All mod files on UT3MOD.COM are USERDATA.JAM files — the official mod format designed by Epic Games for UT3 on PS3. They can only be read by the game itself and cannot contain viruses or malware that would affect your PS3. The files are sourced from verified Internet Archive collections and served directly from our own Cloudflare R2 storage with no third-party redirects or suspicious download pages.

Do mods work on the digital/PSN version of UT3?

The mod import feature was built into the North American disc version of UT3 (BLUS30086). If you have the digital/PSN version, mod compatibility depends on whether it includes the same mod import feature. The disc version is the most reliable way to use mods. Check your game's menu for Community → My Content → Import Mod — if that option exists, mods should work.

Can I still play UT3 online on PS3?

Epic Games shut down the official GameSpy-based multiplayer servers in 2014. However, local multiplayer and bot matches still work perfectly, and all mods from UT3MOD.COM function in offline and local play. Split-screen multiplayer with mods is a great way to experience the content. For the latest information on community server solutions, check the Unreal Tournament Discord (89,965 members).

Installation

How do I install a mod on my PS3?

The basic process is: download the USERDATA.JAM file to your computer, copy it to a USB drive in the correct folder structure, plug the USB into your PS3, and import it through the game's menu. Here's a quick summary:

  1. Download the USERDATA.JAM file from the mod's page
  2. Create folder path on USB: PS3/SAVEDATA/BLUS30086-MODIMPORT/
  3. Place the USERDATA.JAM file inside that folder
  4. Plug USB into PS3 and launch UT3
  5. Navigate to Community → My Content → Import Mod
  6. Select and import — done!

For detailed instructions with screenshots and troubleshooting, see our full Install Guide.

Can I install multiple mods at once?

You can only import one USERDATA.JAM file at a time through the PS3's Mod Import feature. However, once a mod is imported, it stays on your PS3's hard drive permanently (until you manually delete it). So you can download and import mods one by one — each mod will remain available after import, and you can use them all together in your matches.

What USB format does the PS3 need?

The PS3 requires FAT32-formatted USB drives. Most USB flash drives under 32 GB come pre-formatted as FAT32 and will work immediately. If your drive is formatted as NTFS or exFAT (common for larger drives), you'll need to reformat it.

To format on Windows: Open File Explorer, right-click the USB drive, select "Format", choose FAT32 from the file system dropdown, and click Start. On Mac: Open Disk Utility, select the USB drive, click Erase, and choose "MS-DOS (FAT)" format. Note: formatting erases all data on the drive, so back up any important files first.

The mod won't import — what do I do?

Check these common issues: (1) Make sure the folder path is exactly PS3/SAVEDATA/BLUS30086-MODIMPORT/USERDATA.JAM — spelling and capitalization matter. (2) Verify the USB drive is FAT32 formatted. (3) Make sure only one USERDATA.JAM file is in the MODIMPORT folder. (4) Try a different USB port on the PS3. (5) If the file downloaded as a .zip, extract the USERDATA.JAM from inside it. If none of these work, the mod file may be corrupted — try re-downloading it.

Archive & Recovery

Why do some mods say "File Not Yet Recovered"?

When the original UT3MOD.COM was active (2007–2020), mod files were hosted on third-party services like fileden.com. When those services shut down, the download links broke. Community members preserved many of the files in Internet Archive collections, but not all files were captured before they were lost. We've recovered 332 out of 414 mods so far. If you have a copy of any missing USERDATA.JAM file, please contact us so we can preserve it for the community.

What is the Make Something Unreal Contest (MSUC)?

The Make Something Unreal Contest was a landmark modding competition run by Epic Games and Intel from 2008 to 2009. With over $1 million in prizes including a commercial Unreal Engine 3 license, it was one of the largest modding contests in gaming history.

The contest ran in four phases, each with different categories: Best FPS Mod, Best Non-FPS Mod, Best Map, Best Character, Best Vehicle, and more. Some of the winning and notable entries were converted to PS3 USERDATA.JAM format and hosted on UT3MOD.COM, giving PS3 players access to these competition-grade mods.

Our MSUC Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3, and Phase 4 categories preserve these contest entries as historical records of the UT3 modding community's most ambitious work.

Can I submit a mod or help recover missing files?

Yes! If you have USERDATA.JAM files from the original UT3MOD.COM that aren't on the site yet, or if you're a mod creator who wants your work preserved in the archive, please email contact@ut3mod.com. We're especially interested in recovering the files listed as "Not Yet Recovered" on the site. You can also reach us through our Twitter/X or Facebook pages.

Understanding Mod Types

What kinds of mods are available?

UT3MOD.COM hosts 20 categories of mods. Here's what each type offers:

Maps — Custom arenas and battlegrounds. Includes Deathmatch (free-for-all), CTF (Capture the Flag), Vehicle CTF, Warfare (node-based objectives), Bombing Run, Greed, and the unique UT2D (2D-style) maps. Maps are the most common mod type and range from compact dueling arenas to massive vehicular battlefields.
Characters — Custom player models and skins. From original designs to pop-culture references, character mods let you change your in-game appearance. They appear under various factions in the character selection menu.
Mutators — Game rule modifiers that change how matches play. Mutators can alter physics, weapon behavior, player speed, damage rules, and more. They can be combined with any map or game type for unique gameplay experiences.
Game Types — Entirely new game modes beyond the standard UT3 offerings. These range from classic modes like Jailbreak and Invasion to completely original concepts created by the modding community.
Weapons, Vehicles & Packs Custom weapons replace or add to UT3's arsenal. Vehicle mods add new rides for vehicular maps. Mod Packs and Map Packs bundle multiple mods together for convenient downloading.
